What is Anger?

anger management counseling / therapy According to the American Psychological Association, Anger is an emotion characterized by antagonism toward someone or something you feel has deliberately done you wrong.
Anger can be a good thing. It can give you a way to express negative feelings, for example, or motivate you to find solutions to problems. But excessive anger can cause problems. Anger Management

The Mayo Clinic Staff defines Anger management as a process of learning to recognize signs that you're becoming angry, and taking action to calm down and deal with the situation in a positive way. Anger management doesn't try to keep you from feeling anger or encourage you to hold it in. Anger is a normal, healthy emotion when you know how to express it appropriately. Anger management is about learning how to do this.

A few of the most common factors that make people angry are:
  • Grief - losing a loved one.
  • Sexual frustration
  • Pain
  • Withdrawal from drugs or some medications
  • Physical illness
  • Mental illness
  • Alcohol, some drugs, alcohol abuse, drug abuse
  • Being teased or bullied
  • Failure
  • Infidelity
  • Financial problems

Do I Need Help?

The following may indicate that you need anger management help:
  • You have trouble with the authorities (the law).
  • You frequently feel that you have to hold in your anger.
  • You have numerous arguments with people around you, especially your partner, parents, children or colleagues.
  • You find yourself involved in fights.
  • You hit your partner or children.
  • You threaten violence to people or property.
  • You have outbursts where you break things.
  • You lose your temper when driving and become reckless.
